“Ang taong hindi marunong lumingon sa kanyang pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa kanyang patutungohan!” _ JPRMR, national hero.
This popular line by Kasamang Jose is the refuge of parents in counselling children who stay out of synch from family traditions. Thus, in our childhood we hear tales about parents walking to school clutching celophane bag containing school supplies, linung-ag saging for snacks, kan-on nga mais with ulo sa bulad as sud-an for lunch wrapped with banana leaves. ” Sa among panahon… blah, blah, blah, swerte kaayo mo karon kay… chu, chu…” They painted a picture of themselves as deprived, luoy, “uyamot”, etc.
There is no serious and exact account as to how our grand grand parents lives were. All the stories we’ve heard were just information passed on by tsismis, or through funny jokes cracked during fiesta, kalag-kalag, bilar, etc meant to amuse visitors, friends, and relatives. However, there are few who witnessed their gallant lives, accounts that says our grand parents kuno were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. There are accounts that says they were the wealthiest family in their times in the small town of Moalboal. Maybe, just maybe, our grand parents could have afford to send their children to the best school in the country or fund the business they like to raise their respective families. How true are these bits and pieces of information? And what went wrong ?
In my interviews with older relatives, they can only remember our patriarch Primo Redoble and Gregoria Sabanal. They could not even remember all the names of the couples’ children. Some names mentioned were Teodorico Redoble ( our lolo Rico, bana ni lola Iyang), Pacencio Redoble( papa nila Joecard, Garita Redoble, Inela Redoble, Lucia Redoble, Teodoro Redoble, and Juan Redoble(last account was in Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte). For sure there are more children not mentioned because they are a big family. Remember, Redoble’s are cursed, they are tigasin!
Seriously, Tatay Primo and Nanay Goria were local businessmen. Between the two, Nanay Goria posted a stronger personality than Tatay Primo. No one knows how this happened, maybe, nasakpan sad tu si Tatay mao nga pwerteng buotana. They were engaged in hemp, rice, livestock, and poultry production and trading business. They own vast parcel of land. The ”Baton System” which is still very popular in Moalboal now, a system of raising animals where the owner leases his cow to a friends who tends and feeds the cow until it’s ready to be sold and the proceeds would be divided between them, is a system that could be traced to Tatay Primo’s business acumen. He could have won the World Bank’s award of micro-lending in his time.
Lolo Rico drove his own passernger bus bringing people and merchandise to and from both ends of Cebu, while Lola Iyang tends his tindahan in the market. Imagine, no one among the siblings was sent for formal education. Maybe, the other children of Tatay Primo were also given capital to start off their own business.
Before the second world war there was a big fire in Moalboal where the two houses of Tatay Primo and Lolo Rico were burned to ashes. Their life-time coin savings contained in jars were minted like lava reducing its value to zero and everything valuable inside their houses were turned to dust. They were left with nothing but their hopes of re-building everything again. I am sure our resilency to the blows of the tides of life we get from them.
During the war Lolo Rico was serving as the driver mechanic of the late Congressman Mariano Cuenco, the father of Congressman Tony Cuenco. I recall Tiyo Abun telling me to approach Tony Cuenco whenever I have problems in Cebu because the Cuenco’s are close to Moalboalanons. When Cebu City fell to the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army at the peak of the war, Lolo Rico walked from Cebu City to Moalboal to re-unite with his family.
After their truamatic experience during the war Lolo and Lola were back to their business. However, the political tide turned in Moalboal. This started the diaspora of the Redoble’s from the little town of Moalboal to the lands of Mindanao. But were we the first Redoble ever to live in Mindanao? How come we have relatives in Jolo, Sulu; Labason, liloy Zamboanga del Norte; in Bukidnon; in Monkayo, Davao? Are they they same descendants of Tatay Primo and Nanay Gregoria?

Nice article…
tracing our roots would be very challenging but very doable. In all the Redoble clan, i think our family is the only family that has been talking and tried a little bit in tracing the Redoble roots. This brings to the question “WHY”. Why do we exert efforts to trace our roots? As for me, knowing our past is knowing ourselves better…we can only become a better family if we know more about our descendants. For if our descendants made mistakes then we can learn from it, and if our descendants where good and intelligent people then we can finally understand why we are also good and intelligent people bwahahahahahahahahahahaha

Redoble aggregate intelligence - very high.
Redoble business accument - very high.
Redoble people skills - very high.
Redoble emotional intelligence - high.
Redoble genetic defect - heart.
Redoble history of lunacy - none.
Redoble history of suicide - none.
Redoble history of smoking - very high.
Redoble history of drinking alcoholic beverages - very high.
Male Redoble testosterone level - very high.
Redoble history of promiscuity - very high.

I found this while surfing on the net about our roots. It says that the gadors, redobles, babieras and the cabarons were originally from bohol and were the first settlers of Moalboal. Laurente Sabanal was the first to live in Moalboal, He literaly lived alone after escaping from a spanish detention cell in bohol for killing a guardia civil.
MOALBOAL - Southwest Cebu Coast
This story is probably the first historical account on the use of canes and Latin Oracion against Moro Invaders and the significant contribution of Bohol style Eskrima to the Cebuano Martial Arts. Again, I would like to reiterate that the writers belong to the mainstream academe and were in no way involved in the research of Filipino Martial Arts history.
“Oral tradition relates that Boholano pioneers founded the town of Moalboal. A substantiation of this contention is that its leading families - the Gadors, Cabarons, Bableras, Redobles and many more - came from Bohol. Another fact is that many residents, especially the older ones, still speak with Boholano accent.
The first Boholano to settle in the town was Laurente Sabanal. He was captured by the Spaniards in Bohol for having killed a guardia civil. But he later escaped on a rowboat to Cebu. He chose Moalboal as his new home, having found the land fertile and the sea abundant with fish. He lived alone for a while, but he later returned to his native town and brought back with him his family and some relatives to emigrate to his new-found home. Expectedly, he became the ruler of the settlement.
The Muslims also directed their raids at Moalboal, being already a prosperous settlement. But led by Sabanal, the inhabitants successfully repulsed the invaders. They attributed their victory to Sabanal’s oracion. When he died, it is said that he was buried by the shore marked by his magic cane. To this day, a part of it could still be seen. In his honor, the people named a street along the shore.”

Laurente “Llaguno” Sabanal was a hero not only to the Moalboalanons but also to all Filipino eskrimadorer becuase of his unique skills and bravery in protecting Moalboal from the Moro pirates. Here’s an article written that describes what he did.

new update.
The Redoble’s of Jolo, Bukidnon, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del sur came from Negros. They went to Mindanao to work for a certain Mr. Romer, an american who owned a vast coconut plantation in Mindanao.
they are the descendant of Sanoy Redoble, Esteban Redoble, and Pedro Redoble. Subayon pa natu ni basig mao ni mga igsoon ni Tatay Primo nga nangadto sa Negros before ni adto sa Mindanao.
There’s a possibility that the Redoble’s of Ilocos are from Moalboal, and not the other way around. One theory is that their patriarch could be one of the redoble nga mga mercenary sa spaniards who were commissioned by the group of Legazpi in their conquest in Luzon unya wala na nakabalik sa Cebu.
And then funny sad kaayo kay Si mama Talina(Catalina Hernan) ni Angie nga wife ni Nong Quinoy, Aquilino Redoble ang real name nga Mama nila ni Lydia nga naka work before sa Labangon is also a relative kay ang iyang mama is a Sabanal nga taga Moalboal. Ang Hernan nga family name kay gikan diay sa Dumanjug.
I never realized how big we grew as a family not until my experiences in Ipil. While waiting for the bus to Zamboanga duna koy katapad nga naghulat nga mo open ang Land Bank. When he said he’s from Kalawit, I told him nga daghan ra ba Redoble diha. Ni ingon bitaw na nga Redoble kuno iyahang Mama. His name is Tata Redoble Salientes.

And so the plot thickens … maayo na kay you have time to travel ug ma meet nimo ang mga redobles … basta daghang igsoon si tatay primo ug duna sad siya mga extra curricular children … hehe

There is a Gabales who married a Redoble in moalboal. He’s our father’s first degree cousin. Your parents’ case is the reverse, a Redoble married to a Gabales. For sure we are closely related.
This time of the year is the best to visit Moalboal kay halos tanan manguli. time to meet your relatives.

Aloha mga kaliwat. Very glad and excited to find your site while browsing the net. We too are trying to trace our roots but so far have not made much progress. My grandfather Mariano was from Sibonga when he left for Dipolog. Since my father was born in 1917 and was the 3rd of 5 sibling, I can safety guess my grandpa was born in the late 1800’s. Got very limited information about my grandpa, except that he has a brother Cayetano and some sisters but I can not relate how and when they moved to Sibonga. I have been to Moalboal only once during kalagkalag in 2004. We’ve visited graves and saw one of Benjamin and Diego(Delcano?) Tony was our guide who is my 2nd cousin, the nephew of Cayetano. My father and his older brother settled in Lanao del Norte where I graduated HS in 1954. My cousins and their broad still live there and most of them are in Iligan City.
There are Redoble’s here in Hawaii but their elders were from Narvacan Ilocos Sur. My siblings are in Guam and California.
Hope to meet the clan someday for a great reunion.
