The good thing of being a priest is that I can be just any where and meet just anybody. Celebrating Mass here or there, sometimes bring about surprises. I can be requested to say mass, and there in the community could be the President of the Philippines or the barangay captain of a lowly sitio, a senator or a congressman or a mayor or just proud owner of a shanty made of cut plywood, boxes and tarpaulins, or whatever. I can be in a very sweet smelling perfumed hall or in place with a heavy stench of a tejero or a canal or that pungent but good to smell dried fish being grilled or fried; I sometimes am called to celebrate mass at the parishes of posh villages or the pasilio of a squatters area in Paranaque, las pinas or pasay. Wherever it is, my celebrating mass is always a privilege and a challenge anywhere and any time and with just any body in the congregation.
This evening, I celebrated a requiem mass for Conchita Uriarte, a remarkable woman, very much loved by her family and friends. A good friend, Vicky Pertierra, asked me to come to the wake and say mass for her eternal repose. And so, off I went, after my 6:00PM anticipated Mass in my parish. The wake is in her house in Alabang Hills Village (Muntinlupa). There were many people, some were familiar faces, parishioners of the Sacred Heart Parish, others I only see during wakes and other occasions. But, among them stand tall a petite woman, Pilita. She was seated just on my left side. I saw her but, protocol says (Haha), I should not be starstruck. So I went on preparing the mass just as normally as I do. We started the Mass and she was really participating in it. I could hear her answers and prayers.
After the mass, people I know approached me to say hello and I, for the first time, manage a smile and a nod to Pilita. Vicky, as usual, the great hostess, called Pilita and introduced me to her. But, of course, I know her. And so, the bisaya in her escaped her mouth and say some words. Haha, she thought I might not be cebuano, and so she reverted to english .. hehe, I reassured her that I too am a cebuano by complementing her succesful concert in cebu .. she was elated with that ..and was grateful.
I said how I wish she can come and sing also in my church .. oh, her eyes smiled and said, ngano dili gud .. hulat lang fr. benjie kay hatagan ta ka sa akong calling card ..(why not? Wait I will give you my number).. looking for it in her bag, her lighter dropped, “And she said: Ay, gi atay!!” haha. lovely woman. She said , sorry, though the people around her did not understand the word.
Any how, Pilita has always remained the way she is .. very lovely, beautiful and approachable and smiling. I once noticed how she acceded to the requests of people in Waterfront (Lahug) before her concert, to have a picture with her. Definitely, I will be inviting her to sing in the parish this year. It is our 30th Year as a parish! If the price is affordable. But she told me, “Fr. don’t worry about the price. You just give me a very good sound system”. Of which I replied, “O yes, I do have the best sound system. hehe, Mr. John Santos, the musical director of ABS CBN always comes to my rescue whenever I need sound system! Of which she replied:Oh, John Santos? there you are, I can come and sing in your parish! So Cebuanos out there, be sure to be in my parish come October Fiesta .. and listen to this diva! I always loved her songs and her shows! I always have a good feeling after her shows. Great singer! Great performer and artist. I salute her.

(sorry this is not my language, but i have to say it for Pilita, hahahaha) anyway, paborito nako si Pilita labi na iyang kanta nga Balud sa Kalimot, susss! di man ko kaanha ug Octobre oi. puede Mayo? hehhehehe
