Redoble Family

Last night, I have watched for the first time the New Game Show of GMA, The Manny Many Prices.  I was curious how the show would be, having an anchor man who has never been into Show Time, aside from the punches and sweats he showed whenever fights are in the offing. He is the “Ninong”, a new ninong for the numerous poor & simple people who see in shows like this, the redemption from the life situation they found themselves in.  They see, I suppose, in this new show the fulfillment of their dreams of hitting big, which they could not get easily through the PCSO Lottery or the illegal number games in their neighborhood.  The new dispenser of money, goods, lots and Houses is no other than, Congressman Manny Pacquiao!

The game show promises many gifts from “Ninong”.  And true enough, money was literally flowing .. raising the temperature of the people in the studio.  And on the T.V. screen, a note “live” coverage is on.

Ninong Manny is born to be a great boxer .. has much money to share .. but he may need lots of orientation, tutoring, training to hew his new personality: anchoring a game show.  Forget about the diction, intonation and phonetics: that is Manny .. and people accepted him as such!  He doesn’t have to compete with the good diction of his co-anchor .. the audience love and adore him, and yes, for the gifts and prices!  But here, I mean, his capacity to take cue’s and how to deliver add lib and read the written guide well so that the camera would not catch him really reading it.. but anyway, the people still listens to him.

I was amused at how the games were done .. maybe, everybody on stage were just tensed .. simple games which could have been practiced well so as to deliver it  without a hitch or a ditch.  But .. then again .. the price of Five or Ten Thousands were just flowing in like rain from the heavens.  And so the people were all the more excited.  I begin to be interested.

However, when two glove-like objects were brought in .. and the mechanics of the game was announced by” ninong” himself .. the audience uproar was great . And the problem started, right in front of the camera.  People clinging on to the object not wanting to pass it, with the hope of hugging it when “ninong” stops the song! The response of other people was just natural .. everyone wanted to hold the object .. pulling, body-pushing, hugging, clinging .. maybe punches(I didn’t see any) and curses(I didn’t hear any, too) .. haha .. everyone wants to be rich!  And the big glove is their passport to it .. so no one wanted to be bystander! A pandemonium erupted .. and thanks God .. it was averted when those on stage stopped the game!  But it took so much time, before they decided it: stop .. the tele viewers had had a shock at what was going on with the camera recording everything. It could have been worst.

When the game reappeared on screen, after the break, it was good for “ninong” to remind everybody that all is just a game .. and they should not hurt each other.  But have fun together .. The last game was a revelation .. maybe the first of its kind in a game show, thanks to “ninong”.

After letting dance all in the studio they had chosen five persons, one among them was an old and slowed down with paralysis lolo (grandpa).  He was chosen to play the Jackpot of the game: Bahay at Lupa (House & Lot).  He chose number Two! And he missed the jackpot .. Manny had a heart for him and his family, living in the Garbage  Dumping site of Quezon City, Payatas.  The old man was not happy for his choice .. but still manage to thank Manny for the opportunity!  That was more than “ninong” can take .. and so, the decision: Lolo (grand pa) went home with a new house and lot!  And this to the surprise of all on the Stage, I saw their reactions, and the shouts of approval of the people!  The shows promises more .. for the next episode!

I think shows like these are good for the people, especially those who are  really in need.  It is a hope that these game shows offer to these .. But is this new game show of GMA up for a good start?

First, the anchor men/women should be well at ease with what they are doing, constant practice and honing can help them.  Second, the game should not be televised “Live” to avoid embarrassing situations. Like the one .. passing the object.  Third, the show seem to veer away from what it wants: FUN, FUN, FUN!  But rather went on to be melodramatic.  “Ninong” Manny himself would go back, not once, to the sad story of his life.  Everybody knows that .. and everyone knows Manny has a heart for the simple people .. he doesn’t have to be emotional, being an anchor person. Fourth, the game is always: You win! &You Lost!  To give the Jackpot Price to a person who practically lost the Game, is magnanimous on the part of Manny.  However, it also loses the spirit of the Game!  I hope the only sponsor of the Price is Manny himself .. otherwise, there will be trouble.

As a result of these, the show should hire many security guards and police to hold order on those who would like to enter the game show studio next time.  There will be hundreds … even thousands .. of hot bodies wishing to partake of the game.  Now, that will invite trouble if the crowd will not be contained.  After all, there are lots of cash givings, goods and jackpot price, can be won, even if one fails or loses the game .. as long as one carries a “sad and dramatic” story of his or her life .. a cry and a tear .. or whatever!  And we Filipinos are masters of these ..

And I say: Good luck to this new game show, Manny Many Prices!  Christmas comes early for these people!
